Cecil County Records Aid Research on Black History

February is the month dedicated to honoring the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history, chosen in part to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, an escaped Maryland slave and national leader of the abolitionist movement, and Abraham Lincoln, the nation’s 16th President, under whose term slavery was formally abolished. On the heels of a preservation project on which Crowley Imaging and the Historical Society of Cecil County (Md.) (HSCC) collaborated, we spoke to historian and HSCC board member, Mike…

42 Years; Seven Staff; 150 Anniversaries

A recent article in The Telegraph asks the question, “Have you been working for the same company for too long?” It notes that the average time spent at a single company in the United States is 4.6 years and guesstimates that figures for the United Kingdom are similar. It goes on to give the pros and cons of corporate longevity. For seven of Crowley’s Wicks and Wilson division staff, the answer to the question is – thankfully – “No.” For…

An MLA Christmas

The Crowley Company got an early Christmas present last week when it was announced that four of our scanners were awarded honors in the Modern Library Awards program sponsored by Library Works, Inc. This is especially gratifying because the scanners are judged by the librarians, archivists and other library professionals that actually use the products in their facilities. Two of the scan systems are multi-year winners and two are new to the competition. Platinum Honorees Platinum awards, the program’s highest…

Happy Hanksgiving, part three

The past two Thanksgiving holiday blogs have featured Hank, a handsome English Bulldog belonging to Crowley’s technical support administrator, Cassie Hahn. As a puppy (left), we thought we was adorable and used him as our Thanksgiving model (thus, “Hanksgiving“). Last year (right), we brought him back for an encore performance, not realizing that while he had retained his irresistible wrinkles, he’d also gained 50 lbs and a penchant for flatulence. Putting him on a scanner was decidedly NOT a good…

My Big Fat Archives Experience

If someone had told me two years ago that they were going to set me up on a date with an archivist, my response would have been, “Well now, let me get back to you….” It just happens that I did unwittingly have a date with an archivist of sorts and then, delightfully, married him! President and CEO Christopher Crowley.  Welcome to my Big Fat Archives Experience!! During our courtship, and now our marriage, I was quickly immersed in all…

When You Can’t Be Everything to Everybody…Partner Up

In business, it’s sometimes hard to resist the temptation to add a product or service just because someone has asked for it. There’s a balance between the desire to please and the cost to invent (or re-invent) the wheel. If two businesses are willing, strategic partnerships can be the ideal solution – offering clients enhanced services without added expense or elongated learning curves for any of the parties involved. Two recent partnerships have reminded us of the benefit of pairing…

What I Never Thought I’d Know About The Imaging Industry

When I was in college studying for my communications degree, I never imagined that I would ever have to know the difference between 16mm and 35mm microfilm; 300dpi and 600dpi resolution; or flatbed vs overhead capture. Then I got a job at The Crowley Company. In just a few short years, I’ve learned a lot about the imaging industry and the people who make it their job to preserve and share digital and analog content. It’s the people that I’m…

Parts & Microfilm: The Fourth Piece of Crowley’s 360⁰ Solution

We previously wrote a blog post about Crowley’s technical support services – the third of our four solution categories. Our intention was to quickly follow with the fourth category, parts and microfilm, but developing our new website took priority. Now that we’ve launched the new site (take a peek!),  we’re on track to delve into this often overlooked, yet vital, piece of the pie. Parts Crowley’s international network of partners and our own extensive manufacturing capabilities…

New Website Enhances Search for Clients

Do you remember the Sears “Big Book” – the three-inch-thick, three-pound tome delivered to homes annually until 1993? Children pored over the toy section; women dreamed through the home goods; and men went directly to car accessories and tools. For more than 100 years, the Sears catalog served as “a mirror of our times, recording for future historians today’s desires, habits, customs and mode of living”[1]. As we launched The Crowley Company’s new website this week, with its 210 pages,…

Crowley Interns: Where are they now?

As our tenth intern begins her Crowley tour of duty, it’s a great time to check in on those who have formerly trained with our marketing department while earning college credits. Although many companies find that an intern requires a greater time investment than they deem valuable, The Crowley Company has gained insight – and some pretty good work – from each of our students. In a U.S. News and World Report article titled, “Degrees are Great, but Internships Make…
