Object-Level Targets

Precision Calibration for Every Capture

Object-Level Targets (OLTs) are designed to provide direct, in-frame image quality verification—ensuring that every capture includes measurable benchmarks for resolution, scale, tone, and color fidelity. Unlike general calibration targets, which are often used at the beginning of a session or day, OLTs travel with each object, embedding verifiable metadata directly into every digital file.

The Crowley Company is proud to offer OLTs as part of our comprehensive digitization toolkit, helping organizations safeguard the fidelity, reliability, and preservation-readiness of their digital images.

Why Use Object-Level Targets?

The value of OLTs lies in their ability to deliver repeatable, measurable standards within the actual capture frame. By including a target alongside the object, institutions gain an immediate and enduring reference that can be revisited for quality assurance, future audits, or research verification.

Benefits of using OLTs include:

  • Verify accuracy at the object level – Confirm resolution (dpi), scale, and color for each individual capture.
  • Standardize across projects and operators – Establish consistency between collections, digitization teams, and even across multiple facilities.
  • Support compliance – Simplify adherence to international standards, including FADGI, Metamorfoze, and ISO 19264.
  • Audit-Ready documentation – Provide defensible evidence that imaging projects meet preservation-grade requirements, even years after capture.
  • Protect investments – Avoid costly re-scans by catching issues early and ensuring digital surrogates are correct the first time.

Built for Precision

Every Object-Level Target is engineered with care and precision, ensuring durability, accuracy, and reliability in demanding imaging environments.

Features include:

  • 18 GretagMacbeth color patches + 12 neutral gray patches – Enable precise tracking of color fidelity and dynamic tonal range.
  • Annotated L*a*b* values – Provide an authoritative color genealogy, allowing future comparisons against software or recalibrated systems.
  • Slanted-edge and bar-type wedge features – Allow both visual and software-based evaluation of spatial resolution.
  • Metric and English rulers – Confirm sampling rate and scale accuracy directly in the capture.
  • Rigid or flexible construction – Options for different materials, workflows, and conservation requirements.

Available Object-Level Targets

Rigid Targets

Mounted on sheet metal for long-term durability and compatibility with the magnetic storage cases.

  • 0.5X Target: 4-5/8″ x 5/8″ x 5/64″ (117.5 mm x 16 mm x 2.0 mm)
  • 1X Target: 9-1/4″ x 1″ x 5/64″ (235 mm x 25.4 mm x 2.0 mm)
  • 2X Target: 18-1/2″ x 1-11/16″ x 5/64″ (470 mm x 44.5 mm x 2.0 mm)

Thin Flex Targets

Mounted on black plastic shim stock (0.031 in / 0.79 mm), these targets are thin enough to rest flush with delicate objects. Conservator-preferred, they minimize handling risk if dropped on fragile materials. Not compatible with magnetic cases.

  • 0.5X Target: 4-5/8″ x 5/8″ x 1/32″ (117.5 mm x 16 mm x 0.79 mm)
  • 1X Target: 9-1/4″ x 1″ x 1/32″ (235 mm x 25.4 mm x 0.79 mm)
  • 2X Target: 18-1/2″ x 1-11/16″ x 1/32″ (470 mm x 44.5 mm x 0.79 mm)

Complete Kit

For maximum flexibility, the Object-Level Target Kit includes one rigid target in each size, housed in a black brass-hinged bi-fold case with neodymium magnetic latches. Case dimensions: 2-1/2″ x 20″ x 3/4″ (closed). Gentle finger holds allow for easy removal while ensuring targets remain secure in storage.

Each target is manufactured to rigorous standards and has been tested for precision, durability, and repeatability in professional imaging environments.

Who Benefits from OLTs?

OLTs are an essential quality assurance tool for organizations where precision and preservation are paramount:

  • Libraries and archives – For rare books, manuscripts, maps, and fragile paper collections.
  • Museums – For digitizing textiles, artifacts, and works of art with measurable fidelity.
  • Scientific and medical institutions – For imaging specimens, slides, or research materials requiring measurement-grade accuracy.
  • Government agencies & Service Bureaus – For large-scale projects where compliance, documentation, and accountability are mandatory.
